Metallic bells are among Yang’s signature materials. Known as an important shamanic material in Korean folk tradition, the bells accompany the shaman’s rituals, mediating the humans with other things; ghosts, souls and natural phenomena. The non-melodic rattling sound generated by Yang’s sculptures can be understood as a nod to the rhythmic, monotone and repetitive modes of music elements in shamanistic rituals, which allows Yang to access different cultures.
